Who Was Edward C. Penick?
CAPT Edward C. Penick (1925-1971)
U.S. Navy Captain Edward C. Penick was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on June 14, 1925. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University in 1946 and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Louisville in 1950. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1957 with a certificate in endodontics. From 1959-1962, Dr. Penick was on staff in the Endodontics Department at the Naval Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1964, he transferred to Norfolk, VA, where he became Head of the Endodontics Department at the Naval Dental Clinic. He also directed the endodontic training program at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He returned to the Naval Dental School in 1969, becoming Head of the Endodontics Department and Director of the Graduate Program in Endodontics until his untimely death on April 12, 1971. Captain Penick was a fellow of the American College of Dentists, a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, a member of the American Dental Association, and an honorary fellow of the American Association of Endodontists. He was a nationally known clinician in endodontics, serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology. He was Chairman of the American Association of Endodontists’ Committee for Clinical Correlation of Research and a member of the AAE Education Committee. Captain Penick had served for 19 years in the United States Navy.
